WATERLOO, Ont. (November 11, 2016) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team used a 23-point opening quarter to pace themselves to a 69-53 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds in the first game of a weekend doubleheader Friday night at the Athletic Complex.

The quick start allowed the purple and gold to maintain a comfortable lead, which was never less than five points as they started a season 2-0 for the first time since the 2013-14 campaign.

Leading the way for the Hawks were a pair of veteran guards in Nicole Morrison of Hamilton, and Kaitlyn Schenck of Kitchener, Ont. Morrison scored in a team-high 19 points while adding five rebounds and two assists.

As for Schenck, she continued her solid start to her fifth season with 16 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Irena Rynkiewicz of Mississauga, Ont., added a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds while rookie forward TAYANIA SIWEK-SMITH of Oakville, Ont., chipped in with six points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

On the other side of the floor, Maireed Dunn of Kitchener, Ont., had 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead the visiting Thunderbirds.
