View Stats WATERLOO, Ont. (November 11, 2016) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team used a 23-point opening quarter to pace themselves to a 69-53 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds in the first game of a weekend doubleheader Friday night at the Athletic Complex.
The quick start allowed the purple and gold to maintain a comfortable lead, which was never less than five points as they started a season 2-0 for the first time since the 2013-14 campaign.
Leading the way for the Hawks were a pair of veteran guards in
NICOLE MORRISON of Hamilton, and
Kaitlyn Schenck of Kitchener, Ont. Morrison scored in a team-high 19 points while adding five rebounds and two assists.
As for Schenck, she continued her solid start to her fifth season with 16 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Irena Rynkiewicz of Mississauga, Ont., added a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds while rookie forward
Tayania Siwek-Smith of Oakville, Ont., chipped in with six points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
On the other side of the floor, Maireed Dunn of Kitchener, Ont., had 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead the visiting Thunderbirds.
Laurier now owns a perfect 6-0 record all-time against Algoma.
The two teams will renew acquaintances once again on Saturday afternoon, November 12, as the Hawks and Thunderbirds square off at 1 p.m. at the Athletic Complex.
