WATERLOO, Ont. (October 26, 2016) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s soccer team was knocked out of the playoffs on Wednesday night following a 2-0 loss to the Western Mustangs in the first round of the OUA postseason.
The game started with a 0-0 tie heading into the first half with both teams having opportunities to score. Niklas Bauer
of Newmarket, Ont., had a few opportunities in the game to bury one behind the Mustangs keeper, however the OUA regular season goal scorer could not find the back of the net for the Hawks.
It was in the 73rd minute when the Mustangs broke the deadlock and got one past Rocco Strazzella
, the Hawks rookie goalie out of Woodbridge, Ont. Braeden Gee scored for the Mustangs as the rookie out of Dorchester, Ont., opened the scoring with just 17 minutes left in the game.
With the Hawks pressing to find an opportunity to score, it was the Mustangs coming back down the field and getting a cross crease shot past Strazzella and extending their lead to 2-0 in the 86th minute by way of Jame O’Callaghan out of London, Ont.
This concludes the season for the Hawks as they finished in fourth place in the OUA West and had their highest season win total since 2001.
The game marks the potential end of the career for Hawks in their fourth year including Bauer, Brady Kelly
of Guelph, Ont., Callum Flemming of Toronto, and MICHAEL WARDEN
of Oakville, Ont.
