Waterloo, Ont. (October 12, 2016) - Wilfrid Laurier University is pleased to release the report of the “External Review of Athletics and Recreation at Wilfrid Laurier.”
The external review was requested, together, by David McMurray, Vice-President Student Affairs, and PETER BAXTER
, Director Athletics and Recreation, when staff vacancies provided the opportunity to rethink and re-prioritize its organizational structure to better enable efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of programs and services.
The external examiners and authors of the report were respected student affairs professionals Brenda Whiteside, Associate Vice-President Student Affairs at the University of Guelph, and Therese Quigley, Western University’s Director Athletics and Recreation and a former President, Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). Other committee members of the external review included Luke Fusco, retired Dean of Social Work and Student Athlete Development Advisor, and Tyler Van Herzele, current President of the Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union.
This review centred on the student experience while focusing on the following broad categories: a) strategic planning, goal setting, and assessment practices; b) operational services; c) human resources; d) financial resources; e) facilities; and f) partnerships.
The benefits of external examination and assessment are significant whether things are going well, being sustained, or are in need of major change. The opportunity to commission an external review this year was timely as we continue to strive to ensure high professional standards of excellence and quality in Athletics and Recreation as it impacts the student experience. The report states upfront: “We were all impressed with the many accomplishments of the department, in spite of resource constraint…. The staff show an extraordinary level of commitment, passion, and dedication to students…”
