HALIFAX (October 16, 2016) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team grabbed a share of first place at the 2016 Lawtons Centennial Tournament, hosted by the Dalhousie Tigers, as they finished the four-team event with a 2-1 record.

Laurier kicked the three-day tournament off on Friday, October 14 against the Saint Mary’s Huskies, who won the CIS Bronze Medal a year ago. The Hawks got off to a slow start in the game and could never recover as they lost 74-54.

Rookie guard Brianna Iannazzo of Thornhill, Ont., finished as the Hawks’ leading scorer as she had 13 points while dishing out three assists. Fifth year guard Kaitlyn Schenck of Kitchener, Ont., was the only other Hawk to crack double digits as she had 12 points and five rebounds.

On Saturday, Laurier got off to a much better start against the UQAM Citadins as they led by 10 at halftime and never looked back en route to a 91-74 victory.

Iannazzo was on fire in the game for the purple and gold as she 60 percent from the field (9-for-15) and 66 percent from three-point range (6-for-9) to finished with a game-high 25 points

Schenck added 20 points for Laurier, thanks to making 8-of-9 free throw attempts, while Irena Rynkiewicz of Mississauga, Ont., chipped in with 17 points.

The Hawks closed out the tournament on Sunday against the host Tigers where they outscored Dalhousie 29-16 in the fourth quarter to come away with an 88-77 victory.

Schenck had a big performance as she poured in a career-high 28 points on 8-for-12 shooting while hitting 11 of 16 free throw attempts. She also dished out six assists and grabbed three rebounds.

Iannazzo and SARAH DILLON of Welland, Ont., also were strong with 15 points apiece while rookie forward Jill Condron of Oakville, Ont., came off the bench to add 14 points and three rebounds.

Following the tournament, Schenck was named the Hawks' tournament all-star after averaging 20 points over the three games.

Laurier, who now owns a 3-2 non-conference record, will be back in action on Friday, October 21 for their lone home game of the preseason when they host the Memorial Sea-Hawks at the Athletic Complex. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
