BXC has strong showing at first OCAA race
Laurier Brantford Varsity Cross Country athletes had great showing at first OCAA Invitational this past Saturday.
LONDON, Ont. (September 20, 2016) - This weekend marked a very special event in Laurier Brantford’s Athletics & Recreation history as the department had 3 athletes compete in our very first Varsity competition.
Laurier Brantford cross country runners Mayhala Markell, JESSA BRAUN and Kullen Stewart competed at the Fanshawe College Cross Country Invitational this past Saturday at the Fanshawe Conservation Area. Despite the wet weather conditions and very little training prep, all of our runners had a great showing for their first OCAA varsity competition.
Markell, a first year student from Brantford, Ont., posted a time of 22 minutes, 54 seconds for the 5km route, finishing 37th out of 92 competitors. Braun, a second year student from Kitchener, Ont., posted a time of 23 minutes, 1 second to follow not far behind in 39th.
“We relied on each other to push ourselves throughout the race and to keep a consistent pace. It was great motivation for each of us and we were happy to find our stride together,” says Markell on their close finishing times.
Varsity Coach Cory Currie was pleased with the way that Laurier Brantford represented themselves at their first ever OCAA varsity competition and is confident that the team will continue to have great showings at future events this year.
The cross country team looks forward to their future invitationals over the next month in preparation for the OCAA Championship at the end of October.
