WATERLOO, Ont. (September 6, 2016) - Callum Murphy
, an infielder with the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s baseball team, was one of the 25 players named to the Team Great Britain roster for the upcoming European Baseball Championship in Hoofddorp, Netherlands.
Murphy and Team Great Britain will be one of 12 teams competing at the championship which begins on Friday, September 9 before wrapping up on Sunday, September 18.
"This is a great opportunity for Cal,” said Laurier baseball head coach SCOTT BALLANTYNE
. “Any chance you get to play internationally you have to take it and get the most out of it. Cal has been a very important player for us over the years as he was a starter as a freshman in our championship season. This experience at the European Championships will add to Cal's baseball resume and we hope that he'll come back later this season with additional experience that will help us compete for an OUA Championship.”
Murphy, who is a fourth year Economics major from Mississauga, Ont., appeared in 14 games with Laurier last season, hitting .186 with four doubles and 11 runs batted in (RBI).
Over the course of his three-year career with the purple and gold, Murphy is hitting .204 with 31 RBI while posting an on-base percentage of .376.
Great Britain will compete in Pool A in round robin play against the Czech Republic, Germany, host Netherlands, Russia and Sweden. The team opens the championship against the Netherlands on September 9 at 1 p.m. ET.
