Laurier: 0 York: 2
TORONTO (September 3, 2016) – It would be very hard to find an early season game more anticipated than this one. Two unbeaten sides. Last season’s top two seeds in the OUA’s West Division. Both teams ranked in the CIS Top 10 rankings.
Saturday afternoon was certainly a battle between two of the best in the OUA. Unfortunately for the Hawks, their unbeaten streak was ended on the road to a very tough York Lions squad by a final of 2-0.
The Lions (3-0-0) opened the scoring on the foot of midfielder Christina Morelli of Markham, Ont., in the 18th minute. Despite some spirited fightback from the Hawks (0-1-2), striker Nour Ghoneim of Aurora, Ont., was able to add her league-leading seventh goal of the season in the 64th. The 2-0 score would stand until the final whistle, sending York to its third straight win to start the season.
The Lions finished with 10 shots on target to Laurier’s 5. Hawks goalkeeper Ashley Almeida
of Burlington, Ont., made eight stops. Brampton, Ont., native Taylor Grant picked up the clean sheet for York.
Although a tough result on Saturday, the Hawks proved they could more than stick with some of the best in the province. This should serve as motivation as the purple and gold return home to University Stadium tomorrow to take on Brock (1-2-0), in search of that elusive first win. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
