WATERLOO, Ont. (August 8, 2016) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s baseball team has finalized its non-conference schedule for the 2016 fall season.
The Golden Hawks will open the non-conference season making history as they will host the McGill Redmen for the first time in school history. McGill will travel into Waterloo on Sat. Aug. 27th for a DH at Bechtel Park. McGill are the two-time defending CCBA Champions.
Next up for the Golden Hawks is a Laurier tradition, a double-header at the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in St. Mary’s on Tuesday August 30th. The Golden Hawks will take on the powerhouse U18 Ontario Terriers in the first game and the University of Toronto in the second game.
Laurier will then travel into Etobicoke on Wed. Aug. 31st to take on the Humber Hawks in a DH starting at 1pm. Humber has re-tooled their program this off-season and look to be very completive in the OCAA.
Laurier will then head south for the Labour Day weekend with 4 games in the Windsor area against some top quality programs. On Fri. Sept. 2nd Laurier will play the University of Windsor Lancers who compete in the NCBA, a Club team circuit in the United States. Laurier will then play St. Clair College, the defending OCAA Champs in a 3 game series starting on Sat. Sept. 3rd at Lacasse Park in Tecumseh. Laurier and St. Clair have battled many times over the years as two of the strongest programs in the province.
Laurier will take a couple days off before travelling to Labatt Park in London to conclude it’s pre-season non-conference schedule against the Fanshawe Falcons.
These 11 pre-season non-conference games will prepare the Golden Hawks for their OUA conference opener at home on Saturday Sept. 10th when they host cross-town rivals, the University of Waterloo Warriors in a double header at Bechtel Park. During the course of the season, Laurier will play non-conference games against the likes of the Ontario Royals U18, Great Lake Canadians U18 and the Fieldhouse Pirates U18. All of these U18 programs are highly regarded and have produced some top notch players in recent years, including many who have gone on to play for the Golden Hawks.
“We are excited at the non-conference schedule that we have put together this year,” commented Head Coach SCOTT BALLANTYNE
. “We will play 11 games before our first conference game which will allow us an opportunity to mix and match to find a line-up that we will feel comfortable with to start our season. The non-conference games in the past have always provided us a great opportunity for our younger players to get a taste of what OUA Baseball is all about and that depth proved invaluable to us down the stretch last season. McGill, St. Clair College, Humber College, Fanshawe and the University of Windsor are all very strong teams and will prepare us for our conference season. Getting off to a fast start is a big key to a short season and our tough non-conference schedule will allow us the opportunity gel as a unit before the start of the conference schedule."
The OUA conference schedule will consist of 18 games in 2016. The top six teams in conference play will advance to the OUA Championship tournament which will be hosted by the University of Toronto Varsity Blues from Oct. 14-16 where Laurier will look to re-gain the Championship that has eluded them since 2013.
