WATERLOO, Ont. (August 12, 2016) – The Wilfrid Laurier department of athletics and recreation will host their first School Day Game for football this season on October 14th, 2016 when the Golden Hawks take on the defending OUA Champions, the University of Guelph Gryphons at University Stadium.
School Day Games were implemented by the department three years ago for Laurier’s men’s hockey team when they hosted the University of Waterloo Warriors in an effort to promote sport and the benefits of physical activity to children in the Waterloo Region.
Following sellouts in successive years for the Laurier/Waterloo games in men’s hockey, and a high demand from elementary schools in Kitchener-Waterloo to attend the event, the program expanded to include the men's and women's basketball program. This year, children from across the Waterloo Region will see a live football game at Knight-Newbrough Field at University Stadium on Friday, October 14th at 11:00 a.m.
“This event provides the students with an opportunity to enjoy a very unique live sporting experience while also promoting the benefits of leading a healthy, active lifestyle,” said JON KURSIKOWSKI
, the coordinator of events and sponsorships for the athletics and recreation department. “Not only will the students get the chance to watch some outstanding amateur athletes, and see the potential future benefits of getting involved in sport, but they will also be provided with opportunities during the game to be active themselves.”
In order to accommodate the schools attending the game, the game has been moved from a 1 p.m. start to 11 a.m. General admission tickets for the game are still available for purchase by visiting tickets.laurierathletics.com
or at the box office at University Stadium on the day of the game.
