Varsity sports coming to Laurier Brantford

BRANTFORD, Ont. (July 12, 2016) - Laurier Brantford Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce that they will begin competition in two Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) varsity sports starting in the 2016-17 season.

Beginning in September of 2016, the Golden Hawks will suit up for men’s indoor soccer and men's and women's cross country. Both sports are classified as tournament sports under the OCAA Sport Model meaning they compete in a series of weekend tournaments leading up to an OCAA Championship weekend.

“As the student population has grown at Laurier Brantford, there has been more interest expressed in having varsity sport as a point of pride for the community” commented Peter Baxter, Director, Athletics and Recreation.  “The introduction of men’s indoor soccer and cross country at the OCAA level is in response to that and represents the start of a comprehensive athletics and recreation program. The intent is to add other sports once the YMCA/Laurier Brantford sport and recreation centre is open and sufficient resources are in place to support them.”

“The addition of varsity sport ensures there is a continuum of sport and recreation opportunities for Laurier Brantford students from casual recreation to fitness and intramural sports programs to varsity sport. I look forward to working with the staff at Laurier Brantford Athletics and Recreation to advance these sports in 2016-17,” added Baxter.

In indoor men’s soccer, Laurier will be competing against 18 other OCAA schools from across Ontario with play beginning in January 2017. Meanwhile, the Hawks will become the 23rd school to compete in cross country next season with competition getting underway in September 2016.

The Athletics and Recreation department will begin the process of finding head coaches for both programs in the near future.

Information regarding tryouts will be posted once head coaches are hired.
