OUA announces MBASK 2016-17 schedule

WATERLOO, Ont. (June 13, 2016) - Head coach JUSTIN SERRESSE and the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's basketball team will open their 2016-17 season at home on November 5th against Ryerson University, as per the OUA schedule released on Monday.

Last season the Hawks started off strong, marking a four-game win streak in the early weaks of November before tailing off later to settle at a 9-11-0 regular season record. With a third place rank in the OUA West division, the purple and gold advanced to the first round of OUA playoffs where they were eliminated by the Brock Badgers.

This season, under a new coach, the Golden Hawks look forward to some thrilling matchups in their newly released schedule as they seek to improve their record.

  • The Hawks will host the OUA Champions, Ryerson Rams at 3:00 p.m. on November 5th to kick off their season
  • Bragging rights are on the line in January as the Battle of Waterloo will pit the Hawks against the University of Waterloo Warriors on the 18th at 8:00 p.m.
  • The Hawks travel to St. Catharines for an epic rematch against the bold Brock Badgers on February 4th at 3:00 p.m. that could include largest Golden Hawk fan presence at an away game for the season.
  • Laurier's great rivals, the Western Mustangs, will visit the Athletic Complex Gym for the Hawks final regular season home game on February 11th at 3:00 p.m.

The West Division will once again be a five-team grouping (Algoma, Waterloo, Western, Wilfrid Laurier, Windsor) and include double-header weekends in Sault Ste. Marie against the Thunderbirds within an eight game home-at-home schedule within the division. The West will also play a single game against teams from the Central, East, and North, totaling 20 games.

The OUA playoffs will consist of four rounds with the preliminary round slated for Wednesday, February 22 followed by the quarter-finals on Saturday, February 25. The Wilson Cup Final Four will be hosted by the highest remaining men's teams.  The semifinals are set for Friday, March 3, while the bronze and gold medal games will take place on Saturday, March 4.

The 2017 CIS Final 8 championships will take place just one week later on March 9-12 with the men's final hosted by Dalhousie University at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, N.S.
