WATERLOO, Ont. (May 31, 2016) - Starting this week, the gymnasium at Wilfrid Laurier’s Athletic Complex will be undergoing a $1.5 million revitalization project that will see key parts in the gymnasium replaced and updated to current industry standards.
The project, which has been designed by Forum Athletics, will see the complete demolition and replacement of the current bleachers, curtains and basketball systems. It was made possible by a generous donation from the Student Life Levy, a University funding initiative for special projects that enhance undergraduate student life. That donation was subsequently matched by the University to cover the entire cost of the project.
“This is an exciting, and necessary, project for our department to be undertaking,” said PETER BAXTER, the Director of Athletics and Recreation. “Our facility is receiving a much-needed facelift which will provide a better experience for spectators attending our events.”
“This project will also enhance many areas of our department, including varsity, recreational and intramural sports. Our varsity basketball teams will benefit from playing in an improved facility while events such as our dance showcase, intramural finals and orientation week will also be better accommodated,” added Baxter.
The revitalization project will focus on the demolition and replacing of the current bleachers which have been in place since the 1970’s. The new bleachers will be built using plastic seats rather than the current wooden seats to allow for a much more comfortable experience for all of the events held within the Athletic Complex. Spacing issues for leg room have been addressed by increasing the amount of space for each seat by seven inches.
Another highlight will include a VIP seating area on each side of the gym which will have a true seat located in these sections. All other bench seating will also contain a small back rest that will increase the viewing experience.
Other parts of the project will include replacing the current basketball systems and the divider curtains. Both have been in place for many years and the new systems will be up-to-date with current industry standards.
Work has already started and is set to be completed as of September 1st, 2016, in time for the 2016-17 academic year. Over the next couple of months, the gymnasium will be open sporadically for use but will be primarily closed for scheduled work or pre-booked events.
