Four MFOOT players off to East West Bowl

OTTAWA (April 13, 2016) - Four members of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team will participate in the 2016 East West Bowl to be hosted by McGill University at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium from May 10-14 as Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) announced the team rosters on Wednesday.

Laurier will be well represented at the annual Canadian Football League (CFL) draft showcase with four players suiting up. The Hawks will have defensive linemen Kwaku Boateng of Milton, Ont., and Jalen Price of Hamilton, dressing for the West along with linebackers Brandon Calver of London, Ont., and Nakas Onyeka of Brampton, Ont.

Boateng is coming off a fantastic third season with the Golden Hawks as he was named the recipient of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) JP Metras Award as the top standup lineman in the conference. For the year, the 6-2, 240 lbs. defensive end registered 18 total tackles along with 4 sacks, the fourth most in the conference. He went on to add 8.5 tackles, 3 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in the playoffs and was named a CIS Second Team All-Canadian and OUA First Team All-Star at the end of the season.

Onyeka heads to Montreal as a player to watch after finishing fifth in the OUA in tackles last season with 48. The 6-1, 217 lbs. linebacker also added two sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries en route to being named an OUA Second Team All-star. Onyeka would add 12.5 tackles, one sack and a knockdown during Laurier’s playoff run.

Joining him at linebacker is Calver, who has been one of Laurier’s most consistent defensive performers since joining the purple and gold three years ago. A 6-3, 220 lbs. middle linebacker, Calver is coming off a season in which he recorded 34.5 tackles, along with two sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Finally, Price heads to Montreal looking to showcase his size which has made him an attractive draft prospect. Listed at 6-5, 325 lbs., Price suited up in six games at defensive tackle for Laurier during the regular season recording four total tackles. However, in the playoffs he was much more effective, registering 6.5 total tackles and a fumble recovery in the Hawks two playoff games.

Laurier will also send five members of their coaching staff to the annual showcase game. Head Coach MICHAEL FAULDS, along with Special Teams Coordinator Dwayne Cameron, Offensive Coordinator Mark Surya, Offensive Line Coach Irv Daymond, and Linebackers Coach Jesse Alexander will all have roles with the West team at the event.
