LONDON, Ont. (January 30, 2016) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks dropped to 6-7 on the season following a 77-60 loss to the Western Mustangs on Saturday.
The Mustangs were first on the board with a three-pointer from third year guard Mackenzie Puklicz of London, Ont., that started Western off on the right foot. Although the Golden Hawks managed to find scoring opportunities, the Mustangs found higher success and finished the first frame leading 20-12.
The second quarter saw the Mustangs increase their lead as they limited the Hawks to another 12 points to their 17. The resulting 37-24 lead for the Mustangs highlighted two players on the court who broke double digits by the halfway mark: Puklicz with 14 points, and third year Laurier guard NICOLE MORRISON of Hamilton, with 10.
Going into the second half, the Hawks dug deep and found the steam to push themselves to their best quarter of the game. The 24 points collected, however, would not close the gap enough to bring the game within reach.
By the final frame, the Mustangs had reclaimed control of the court and Puklicz continued to drive Western's offence to take a 77-60 victory. Puklicz shone in the victory for the Mustangs with 32 points, nine rebounds, and three assists.
For Laurier it was NICOLE MORRISON leading the team’s offensive effort with a total of 16 points, four rebounds, and two assists.
Next, the Hawks look to return to the win column when they take on the Ryerson Rams on Friday, February 5th in Toronto. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. and can be seen on OUA.tv.
