WATERLOO, Ont. (January 22, 2016) – Five members of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks scored in double figures on Friday night as the Hawks returned to .500 with a 75-54 win over the Nipissing Lakers.
Although the first quarter was kept close at a four-point difference, the Golden Hawks took off in the second quarter as they shot an impressive 43.8 percent from the field to earn a 36-25 lead by the halfway mark.
The Golden Hawk lead was augmented after the half off the strength of senior guard Kaitlyn Schenck of Kitchener, Ont., who contributed an outstanding 13 points in the second half alone.
By the fourth quarter, the visiting Hawks were up twenty points and the Lakers would not recover as Laurier walked away with a 75-54 victory.
Schenck, who finished the night with 15 points, was one of five members of the purple and gold to finish in double figures. Also having scoring success on this night were Sarah Dillon of Welland, Ont., Nicole Morrison of Hamilton, and LAUREN JAMIESON of Oakville, Ont., who all had 11 points while Courtney Bruce of Orillia, Ont., added 10.
Morrison had a strong all-around night for Laurier as she also contributed eight rebounds, five steals and four assists.
Leading the Lakers offensive effort was senior point guard Rachel Jaworowicz (Midland, Ont.) with 11 points and five rebounds.
With the victory, the Hawks improve to 5-5 on the year while the Lakers fall to 2-7.
The Golden Hawks look to continue their winning ways when they take on the Laurentian Voyageurs in Sudbury on Saturday. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. and can be seen live on OUA.tv.
