WATERLOO, Ont. (January 16, 2015) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks dropped an 81-62 decision at home to the No. 7 McMaster University Marauders on Saturday afternoon.
The game began looking like a carbon copy of Wednesday night’s game for the Golden Hawks against the Brock Badgers; while the opposition took the early lead, the Hawks clawed back to take the lead. By the end of the first quarter there was a healthy 25-17 lead for the home team.
IRENA RYNKIEWICZ of Mississauga, Ont., was a standout for the Golden Hawks early in the game. By the end of the first frame the rookie guard had nailed back-to-back three-point shots to nearly match her standing record for points in a game (seven against Brock on Wednesday).
The momentum for the Hawks didn’t last however, and McMaster took control for the second quarter. Fourth year guard Danielle Boiago of Hamilton, has been a powerhouse for the Marauder offence this season and proved her prowess once again as she drained a total of 16 points and pulled down six rebounds throughout the first half alone.
While the Marauders found their stride, the Hawks struggled to generate movement on their opportunities and it cost the home team as they recorded only eight points for the whole of the second quarter of play. As a result, the visiting McMaster team led 41-33 by half.
Back from the half, the purple and gold found their stride again as they went even with the nationally-ranked Marauders at 18 points each, but without finding a way to limit the opposing offensive attacks the Golden Hawks would not be able to recover from the deficit.
Boiago finished with a game-high 20 points, seven rebounds, and four assists to lead McMaster (7-2) to an 81-62 victory in Waterloo.
Rynkiewicz produced a standout game for her first year in OUA basketball as she matched fifth year guard Courtney Bruce (Orillia, Ont.) with their team-high 13 points each in the Hawks (4-5) effort.
The Golden Hawks look to even things back up with a victory over the Lakers when they head to Nipissing University campus in North Bay on January 22nd. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. and can be viewed on OUA.tv.
