WATERLOO, Ont. (January 13, 2016) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks started 2016 on the right foot with a 57-51 victory over the Brock Badgers in their first game of the Winter term on Wednesday night at the Athletic Complex.

The Golden Hawks started out slow, kicking off some rust from the break as the Badgers clamoured to a 9-1 lead half way through the first quarter. The women clawed back, however, and closed the gap to a manageable 13-8 deficit.

In the following quarter, the Hawks were able to find their groove and captured the lead by adding 17 points in the frame. By the half, the Golden Hawks led 25-23.

Another strong quarter after halftime provided a more substantial lead that would secure the victory, as the final period was a shot-for-shot event.

NICOLE MORRISON of Hamilton, Ont., not only earned the game-high 15 points, the third year guard also recorded two assists which puts her over 100 assists in her career. She also added seven rebounds on the night.

Also chipping in for the purple and gold were Courtney Bruce of Orillia, Ont., who had 11 points while rookie Irena Rynkiewicz of Mississauga, Ont., added seven points off the bench in 15 minutes.

For the Brock Badgers (5-3) it was fifth year guard Jenalyn Yumol of London, Ont., and second year guard Melissa Tatti of Ancaster, Ont., shining in the opposing effort: Yumol recorded a team-high 13 points and added two rebounds and four assists while Tatti recorded 12 points, eight rebounds.

The victory puts the Golden Hawks at an even 4-4 on the season and back on the right track to take on the No. 7 McMaster Marauders on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Athletic Complex.
