OUA releases 2016 MFOOT schedule

BURLINGTON, Ont. (December 15, 2015) - For the first time since 2008, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team will open a season at home as Ontario University Athletics (OUA) released the 2016 schedule last week.

The Hawks, who have not hosted a home game in Week 1 of a season since 2008 when they hosted the Guelph Gryphons, will open the year at University Stadium on Sunday, August 28 against the Queen’s Gaels. The game represents a good early season test for a pair of teams who both qualified for the OUA playoffs in 2015.

Laurier will remain at the friendly confines of Knight-Newbrough Field for their Week 2 matchup as they welcome the York Lions to town for a Labour Day showdown on Monday, September 5.

After a bye week during Week 3 of the season, head coach MICHAEL FAULDS’ squad will travel to Ottawa for their first road game of the season against the Carleton Ravens. The game will mark the Hawks first road game against Carleton since 1969 as the two conference semifinalists go head-to-head for just the second time since the Ravens returned to the OUA in 2013.

Homecoming weekend is up next for the Golden Hawks as Laurier welcomes back their alumni on Saturday, September 24. The purple and gold will host their crosstown rivals, the Waterloo Warriors, on Homecoming for the first time since 2007 as they look to extend their impressive 12-game win streak in the Battle of Waterloo.

A pair of road games follows for the Hawks as they travel to London on Saturday, October 1 to battle the Western Mustangs at their annual Homecoming game. Laurier will then face the Toronto Varsity Blues on the Thursday of Thanksgiving weekend, October 6.

Week 8 of the season sees the purple and gold return to University Stadium for their final home game of the regular season as they tangle with the defending Yates Cup Champions, the Guelph Gryphons, on Saturday, October 15.

The Hawks close out the regular season on Saturday, October 22 with a trip down the 401 to face the Windsor Lancers.

Laurier’s two non-combatants for 2016 will be the McMaster Marauders and the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

Season tickets for the 2016 season will go on sale in the New Year. Stay tuned to for complete details.
