Holiday with the Hawks - Cedarbrae PS

The Laurier Lettermen club visited Cedarbrae Public School on Tuesday, December 8th. The visit marks the final phase of Lettermen’s “Holiday with the Hawks” initiative. Spearheaded by Lettermen’s President, Tamika Marks-Grant (Women’s Rugby) , and co-directors, Suzanne Boroumond (Women’s Soccer) and Brandon London (Men’s Rugby), the initiative focuses on providing at-risk youth at Cedarbrae and children in care at Grand River Hospital with gifts during the holiday season.

The Lettermen volunteers assisted with the Running and Reading program at Cedarbrae. Lettermen ran the Running portion of the program where the children completed a relay race in which each child had to solve for a ‘Word of the Week’ by reading a clue and deciphering scrambled letters. The children learned the meaning of, and how to spell, “discipline” and learned where the Holiday Hawk lives. The children also did their daily reading and learned some of the classic songs sung during the holidays.

After the running and reading portions of the program had completed, all of the kids returned to the gym to sing some thank you songs for Lettermen’s and Running and Reading’s volunteers. Songs sung included Frosty the Snowman, Jingle Bells, Santa Clause is Coming to Town, and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. After the singing, the children received gifts from the Holiday Hawk and every kid was extremely grateful and ecstatic for the gifts they received.

When asked why the Holiday with the Hawks program was so important, Tamika Marks-Grant said, “I wanted to participate in Holiday with the Hawks because I believe every child deserves an amazing holiday experience. It truly makes me happy to see that something as small as buying a gift can brighten up someone's day so much, especially the kids at Cedarbrae. They are a great bunch of students and deserve being rewarded for doing such great things.”

Lettermen would like to thank Variety Village and National Sports for all of their support and for making Holiday with the Hawks such a success. Lettermen would also like to thank Men’s Baseball, Men’s Hockey, and Men’s Football for their generous donations.

Other influential volunteers for the Holiday with the Hawks program included: Kyla Churchill, Samantha Reid, Jacqueline Jamula, Jennifer Gilmour, Chloe Graves, ABBYGALE BRECKLES, Hayley Desjardins, Jordan Ford, Robert Cini, Christopher Matsoukas, DJ Drysdale, Brandon Wazy, Jake Tougas, Connor Patterson, Austin Reusch, Godfrey Onyeka, Jacky Normandeau, Tierney Dunham, Courtney Bruce, Bridget Ribau, and Leah Will.

Lettermen will now turn its focus to their annual Powderpuff tournaments in an effort to raise money and support for local women’s shelter, Anselma House. Lettermen hopes everyone has a Happy Holidays and wishes all students at Laurier the best of luck on their exams.
