WATERLOO, Ont. (November 7, 2015) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team was defeated by the Western Mustangs by a score of 80-61 on Saturday afternoon.
Western hit the ground running to start the contest, racking up a solid 24 points while limiting the home team to only 11 points. The Hawks struggled to make good on the opportunities they had, and the trend continued for the rest of the half.
Laurier made only 16.7 per cent of their shots from inside the arch while Western made 47.2 percent of theirs, which was the biggest factor in the steep 50-19 half time score.
After the half the Hawks came back with a new-found fire, dramatically improving their offence and racking up almost 30 points in the third quarter to cut the Mustang lead in half.
The final stretch of play could have gone either way based on the previous three quarters and a 63-48 score going in, but the Mustangs were able to keep the Hawks in check and secured an 80-61 victory.
For the Mustangs it was guard Caroline Wolynski (London, Ont.) making the difference on offence as she single-handedly contributed an impressive 32 points for Western.
Despite recording their second loss, Laurier saw four Hawks break double digits in the contest. NICOLE MORRISON (Hamilton, Ont.) led the way with 13 points scored, followed by Kaitlyn Schenck (Kitchener, Ont.) with 12, Sarah Dillon (Welland, Ont.) also with 12, and Heather Payne (North Bay, Ont.) with 10 for the purple and gold.
The Hawks hit the road to take on the Algoma Thunderbirds in Sault Ste. Marie for back-to-back games next weekend where they will look to even up their regular season record. The games can be seen live on OUA.tv.
