LONDON, Ont. (November 4, 2015) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s rugby team lost their OUA quarter-final matchup in London by a score of 67-26 to the Western Mustangs on Wednesday night.
The Mustangs took control of the game early as they racked up a steady stream of points and took a 36-0 lead before the Golden Hawks responded.
With a couple of tries from Andrew Thomson (Pickering, Ont.) and a pair of successful conversions from Maclain Wakefield (Oakville, Ont.), the Hawks looked as though they might be engineering a comeback rally. The Hawks chipped away at the Mustang lead, narrowing the gap to only a ten-point difference by the 60th minute of play.
The 36-26 score would be the best the Hawks would see, however, as the home team galloped away with the remainder of the game and denying the Hawks another scoring opportunity to end the game 67-26.
Leading the offensive effort for the Mustangs was Mark Denton (Aurora, Ont.) who recorded 22 points on seven conversions, one try, and one penalty goal.
With a young, up-and-coming team, the Golden Hawks will return many of their players next season as they look to build on back-to-back appearances in the OUA playoffs.
