MONTREAL (October 19, 2015) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team finished third at the McGill Redbird Classic this past weekend after posting a 1-2 record in games against the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack, the Victoria Vikes and the host McGill Martlets.
Laurier opened the tournament on Friday against the Wolfpack where they edged out a 60-58 win over their opponents from Kamloops, B.C. Third year guard NICOLE MORRISON of Hamilton, led the way for Laurier as she had 16 points and eight rebounds while Amanda Milanis of Tecumseh, Ont., and Alexandra Spadaro of Grimsby, Ont., each chipped in with 13 points.
Game two for the Hawks saw them taking on Victoria and a slow start cost the purple and gold as they lost 80-59. Morrison was a bright spot for Laurier as she was 9-for-18 from the floor, scoring a game-high 22 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists.
The Hawks final game saw them taking on the defending CIS silver medalists and host team McGill. The Martlets used a big first quarter, outscoring Laurier 26-13 en route to an 82-55 victory.
Coming off the bench, Morrison once again led Laurier as she finished with 17 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Fittingly, the Hawks guard was named to the All-Tournament team as she finished the weekend averaging 18.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
Laurier, now 3-2 in preseason play, will wrap up their non-conference schedule this upcoming weekend as they will play in the Metro Glebe Tournament, hosted by the Carleton Ravens. The Hawks will face the host Ravens, the UQAM Citadins and the Regina Cougars.
