WATERLOO, Ont. (October 3, 2015) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team topped the Trine University Thunder 74-60 in non-conference action to improve to 2-0 in preseason play on Saturday.
In the opening quarter the Hawks and Thunder seemed to be well matched as they went basket-for-basket, racking up a 16-15 score to end the first quarter with Laurier in the lead.
The second quarter played out in the same pattern; Trent keeping pace, notching another 15 points, and Laurier putting together a few more points to increase their lead to 34-30 at the half.
After half, the Hawks found their rhythm and crafted a solid ten-point gap throughout the remaining two quarters over the visiting Trine women that solidified the game at 74-60.
Four Hawks earned double-digit points for their team in the winning effort; COURTNEY BRUCE (Orillia, Ont.) led the way with 15, Kaitlyn Schenck (Kitchener, Ont.) notched 14, and Amanda Milanis (Tecumseh, Ont.) and Nicole Morrison (Hamilton, Ont.) had 13 each.
Brandi Dawson and Whitney Shaffer led the Trine Thunder in their offensive effort with 14 and 13 points respectively.
The Hawks continue their non-conference play when they head to Montreal to compete in the McGill Redbird Classic on October 16th when they’ll face Thompson Rivers University to start the tournament.
