WATERLOO, Ont. (October 3, 2014) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team started off preseason play with an 67-56 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday night.
The Golden Hawks started slowly in the opening quarter but eventually found their groove as a late run gave them a 17-8 lead after the opening quarter. The two teams would trade offensive chances throughout the second quarter and when the halftime buzzer sounded, five baskets was all that separated the two teams with Laurier leading 36-26.
Laurier managed to stretch their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Voyageurs 18-13 and that would prove to be more than enough as the purple and gold held on for the victory.
Standing out on the court was Lauren Jaimeson of Oakville, Ont., who was able to contribute 15 points to the Hawks, 12 of which resulted from 3-point shots. Also crashing the boards hard was Alexandra Spadaro (Grimsby, Ont.) with nine, and COURTNEY BRUCE (Orillia, Ont.) with eight. Spadro especially dominated in regards to defensive rebounds as she had seven in total, while Bruce snatched up six rebounds on the offensive glass.
Meghan Forestell of Mississauga, Ont., led the way for Laurentian with a game-high 16 points.
Exhibition play will be continued on Saturday, October 3, as the Hawks host Trine University. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
