MHKY adds seven recruits for 2015-16 season

WATERLOO, Ont. (August 17, 2015) - Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s hockey head coach GREG PUHALSKI is pleased to announced the seven incoming recruits that will join the purple and gold for the upcoming 2015-16 season.

This year’s recruiting class features five forwards, one defenceman and one goaltender and has a distinctly local feel with four of the players having played their junior hockey in the Waterloo Region.

"I’m excited for this incoming group of new recruits for the upcoming season,” commented head coach GREG PUHALSKI. “Our new Hawks come from the West, the East and from Ontario. We look forward to having them be part of our Laurier Community for years to come. Each new Hawk has competitive characteristics and we are confident they will embrace Laurier in the classroom and on the ice."

Headlining the class is former Waterloo Siskins right winger Christian Mroczkowski. The Wellesley, Ont., native has played the last three years with the Siskins, who share a home rink with the Golden Hawks, recording 85 goals and 114 assists in 145 career games. Last season, the 6-0, 190 lbs., forward led the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL) in scoring with 39 goals and 50 assists in 48 games to earn league MVP honours.

Joining Mroczkowski is another former GOJHL MVP in goaltender Marc Williams of Waterloo, Ont. Williams, who spent four years in the league with both the Siskins and Kitchener Dutchman, captured league MVP honours in 2013-14 when he led the league in goals against average (1.98), save percentage (0.939) and shutouts. Last season, the 5-11, 179 lbs., netminder played for the Georgetown Raiders in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) where he had a 2.34 goals against average and 0.912 save percentage in 30 games.

Rounding out the group of local players is a pair of Elmira Sugar Kings who led their team to a Sutherland Cup appearance last season. Forward Mitch Wright of Chesley, Ont., and defenceman Mac Clutsam of Flamborough, Ont., will continue their hockey careers together at Laurier.

Wright has spent the last three years with Elmira, and four years in total in the GOJHL, where he has 82 goals and 106 assists in 194 career games. Last season, the 5-11, 181 lbs., forward recorded 24 goals and 32 assists in 47 games before adding three goals and seven assists during Elmira’s playoff run.

Clutsam, who sent three years in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with Sault Ste. Marie and Barrie, joined Elmira last season where he was a presence on the blueline. The 5-9, 172 lbs., defenceman had nine goals and 40 assists, along with 130 penalty minutes, in 48 regular season games before adding six goals and 15 assists during Elmira’s run to the Sutherland Cup semifinals.

The three remaining forwards joining Laurier next season include Will Cook of Port Stanley, Ont., Jarryd Leung of Victoria, B.C., and Ryan Langen of Saint John, N.B. Cook comes to the Hawk from the Wellington Dukes of the OJHL where he had 50 points in 38 games last season. Leung, who played the last five years in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), split last season between Powell River and Prince George where he had 11 goals and 28 assists in 44 games. As for Langen, he has played the last five years with the Dieppe Commandos of the Maritime Hockey League (MHL), serving as captain in 2014-15. Last season, he had 31 goals and 38 assists in 47 games and led his team to the league championship.
