TAMPA BAY, Fla. (June 5, 2015) – Former Golden Hawk Steve Griggs, who has led an impressive career in sport management since playing for Laurier's men's hockey team, is now at the helm of the Tampa Bay Lightning as they face off for the ultimate hockey trophy: the Stanley Cup.
Steve Griggs played for the men’s hockey team between 1988 and 1992, during which he earned two OUAA Championships with his team (1988-89 and 1989-90) and played alongside current Laurier head coach GREG PUHALSKI.
“I think the life skills you learn from being on a team help in leading and managing an organization,” said Griggs about his time as a Golden Hawk and the development of his career. “Understanding the vision that team success comes before the individual, having a great work ethic, and doing whatever is asked of you to help the team succeed.”
The former Golden Hawk men’s hockey player was announced as the new president of the Tampa Bay Lightning 14 months ago following five years as Chief Operating Officer for the organization, and has been a part of facilitating the improvements to the brand over his past few years with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
“It is a great accomplishment for the entire organization and I am extremely proud of the work we have done to transform the Lightning into one of the best brands in sports,” commented Griggs. “On a personal level, it has been a great ride and the ups and downs of the Stanley Cup playoffs can be very stressful, yet very rewarding. You never know how many times you will get to the Cup Final, so you need to enjoy every moment of the experience.”
During his tenure with the Lightning, Griggs has managed a leadership team that has rebranded the organization and substantially grown revenues, including a full $60 million arena renovation, the team's appearance in the 2011 Eastern Conference Final, and the doubling of season ticket sales.
Before joining the Lightning, Griggs worked with the Orlando Magic, the Minnesota Wild, and Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment for a combined total of 17 years leading sales and marketing initiatives within a sports management role.
Now the Lightning will face off against the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup Final to see if they can reclaim the Cup for the first time since 2004 and place the crowning jewel in Griggs' outstanding career so far.
