WATERLOO, Ont. (April 9, 2015) - Tuesday morning at The Turret, Wilfrid Laurier University's Department of Athletics and Recreation hosted its annual Recreation Student Leader & Student Staff Brunch recognizing all their achievements over the past year.
This past year was Athletics and Recreation's most successful to date as it saw the largest registration for intramurals, the most participants in our Dance program, our Interuniversity program hosted 2 successful school day events in both Hockey and Basketball, the largest number of visitors each week in all our facilities, the largest number of people per day using the newly renovated fitness centre as well as the busiest open recreation gym time for students. It was with the hard work and dedication of our student team that this is made possible. Our student team spent countless hours working towards every service that is provided to allow for the most positive experience for all participants.
Students also had the opportunity to listen to speeches made by Leanne Holland-Brown, Dean of Students, as well as PETER BAXTER, Director of Athletics and Recreation.
The department also handed out 16 awards as well as recognizing two recipients of scholarship awards which acknowledged outstanding student leadership and contribution at Laurier. The award winners were as follows:
The Don Smith Award is awarded to a student who has made a lasting contribution to Athletic sand Recreation at Laurier. This year's co-recipients were Cris Hurtado & Ryan Doherty. Cris and Ryan are currently the Intramural Co-Coordinators.
The Outstanding Leadership for Customer Service Award is awarded annually to the student who portrays outstanding customer service to all visitors to our facilities. This year's recipient was Hunter Hutt. Hunter has worked the past three years in the department, including roles with Events, Ticketing, Facilities and Customer Service. Hunter is currently our Ticketing Coordinator.

The Department also presented 2 scholarship awards. Denver Hilland was the recipient of the Webster Brother's Award. This award is granted to a second, third or fourth year student who demonstrates leadership in Athletics and Recreation. Strong consideration is given to applicants who have demonstrated positive evidence of leadership within Athletics and Recreation through either participation in leadership, development or community volunteer activities.
The Golden Hawk Student Leader scholarship was also presented to Stephanie Romero. This endowed award is given annually (minimum two semesters in one academic year) to undergraduate students who have served at least one year as a student-leader within the Department of Athletics and Recreation. The students must demonstrate excellent leadership, customer service and technical skills.
Four other Golden Hawk Student Leaders were recognized at our annual Athletic Banquet on Monday April 6th. Kate Walker (Concessions Coordinator, Summer Events Coordinator, Fitness Centre Attendant) was the recipient of the Dean Esther Brandon Award for the female student contribution most the department of Athletics. Soheil Jamshidi (Hawk Desk Coordinator, Hawk Desk Attendant, Summer Facility Attendant) was the recipient of the Bill Hagstrom Awards for the male student contributing most to the department of Athletics. Sam Jacobs (Hawk Desk Attendant, Special Projects Coordinator, Lettermen Vice President, Summer Facility Attendant and Women's Basketball) was the recipient of the Fred Nichols Community Service Award and Dillon Campbell (Hawk Desk Attendant, Summer Facility Attendant and Men's Football) was the recipient of the President's Award as the outstanding male athlete of year.
The Department of Athletics and Recreation would like to congratulate all our students on a successful year. To all those graduating this year, we wish you luck in all your endeavours. You have all impacted Athletics & Recreation is a positive way and will always be a part of the Golden Hawk Family. We are looking forward to another successful year in 2015-2016.
