WATERLOO, Ont. (February 11, 2015) - Welcome to the 19th edition of This Week in Laurier Athletics for the 2014-15 season. In this week’s edition, we set up basketball’s matchups against the Laurentian Voyageurs and the Nipissing Lakers and examine women’s hockey’s final regular season game.
The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks basketball teams welcome the Laurentian Voyageurs to town on Friday night as they continue their season-long four-game home stand at the Athletic Complex.
Both games will have a significant impact on the RPI playoff rankings for both the women’s and men’s teams. With both Laurentian teams having clinched a playoff spot, victories tonight for the Golden Hawk women and men will help push them up playoff standings as the regular season begins to wind down. On the other hand, defeats at the hands of the Voyageurs will be detrimental to Laurier’s playoff ranking.
Laurier’s women, ranked sixth in the country, will be looking to extend their winning streak to three games on Friday. The Hawks are coming off a weekend sweep of the lowly Algoma Thunderbirds that pushed their record to 14-2 on the year.
The Hawks have enjoyed success against the Voyageurs in their most recent meetings as Laurier as won five straight against Laurentian dating back to the 2009-10 season. Last year, the Hawks earned a 75-54 victory against the team from Sudbury on the opening weekend of the season.
While the men’s game has implication on their playoff ranking, Laurier can officially clinch a playoff spot with a win over Laurentian on Friday night. The Hawks enter the second last weekend of the season three games up on the Waterloo Warriors with four games to play and another notch in the win column for Laurier will officially eliminate their cross-town rivals from postseason contention.
The Hawks will be looking to use this game to put behind a tough loss to Algoma in the second game of their weekend doubleheader last Saturday. After opening the weekend in a 20-point victory, the Hawks could not complete the sweep as they lost 85-82.
Laurier may be catching Laurentian at a good time as the Voyageurs have also lost two straight games. The Hawks, however, have struggled against the visitors from Sudbury losing three of their last four meetings, including a 78-71 setback a year ago.
Tickets for Friday’s game can be purchased online at tickets.laurierathletics.com or at the Hawk Desk on game day.
