WATERLOO, Ont. (February 9, 2015) - Women's basketball guard COURTNEY BRUCE of Orillia, Ont., and men's basketball guard Will Coulthard of Oakville, Ont., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 8, 2015.
Bruce had a breakout performance for the No. 6 Golden Hawks in their 82-28 win over the Algoma Thunderbirds on Saturday afternoon. The fourth year communication studies major was nearly unstoppable from the floor, connecting on 10 of her 13 attempts in the game, including 4-for-5 from three point range. She would finish the game with 26 points, six steals, five rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes as she set new career-highs for points, steals and minutes played with her point total doubling her previous career-high of 13. Bruce also chipped in seven points and five rebounds in Friday against Algoma in a 69-32 victory.
Bruce earns Female Athlete of the Week honours for the first time this season and first time in her career.
Coulthard continued his outstanding run of play this past weekend as the Golden Hawks split a pair of weekend games against the Algoma Thunderbirds. On Friday evening, the fourth year geography major finished with 23 points, thanks to a blistering 5-for-10 from beyond the arc, and three assists in the Hawks 82-62 victory. Saturday, Coulthard duplicated his point output from the night before and added six rebounds, four steals and three assists in Laurier’s narrow 85-82 loss. Currently tied for eighth in league scoring, Coulthard has now scored 20 or more points in four straight games, bringing his season average to 18.4
This marks the fifth time in his career, and second time this season, that Coulthard has been named the Male Athlete of the Week.
