WATERLOO, Ont. (February 3, 2015) - Women's basketball guard NICOLE MORRISON of Hamilton, and men's hockey forward Tyler Stothers of Oakville, Ont., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 1, 2015.
Morrison was instrumental in helping the No. 5 Golden Hawks extend their winning streak to 12 games last week. The second year communication studies major recorded her first career double-double as she scored 14 points and pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds to help Laurier defeated the Waterloo Warriors 60-47. She also added three steals and two assists in the victory. Morrison would also record 13 points, five rebounds and three steals in the Hawks 73-59 loss to the No. 9 Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday. For the week, she shot an impressive 44.4 percent from the floor and has now recorded 10-plus points in six straight games.
Morrison earns Female Athlete of the Week honours for the first time this season and first time in her career.
Stothers put forth one of the best weekends of his career last week to help lift the Golden Hawks to a pair of crucial wins in their push for the playoffs. The fourth year communication studies major opened the weekend with his first career hat-trick, which was capped off by scoring the game-winning goal with less than two minutes to play, in Laurier’s 5-3 win over the York Lions. The Hawks team captain would then pick up a pair of assists as the purple and gold defeated Brock 4-1 on Saturday night. His strong weekend gives Stothers points in six of Laurier’s last seven games, during which they’ve posted a 5-2 record to lift them into a playoff spot heading into the final week of the regular season.
This marks the second time in his career, and first time this season, that Stothers has been named the Male Athlete of the Week.
