WATERLOO, Ont. (January 15, 2015) - The Wilfrid Laurier department of athletics and recreation will host their second School Day Game of the 2014-15 season on January 28, 2015 when the Golden Hawks men’s basketball team faces the Waterloo Warriors at the Athletic Complex.
School Day Games were implemented by the department two years ago for Laurier’s men’s hockey team when they host the University of Waterloo Warriors in an effort to promote sport and the benefits of physical activity to children in the Waterloo Region.
Following sellouts in successive years for the Laurier/Waterloo games in men’s hockey, and a high demand from elementary schools in Kitchener-Waterloo to attend the event, the decision was made to host a second event with Laurier’s men’s basketball team.
“The response from the local community has been incredible for our School Day events,” commented Laurier’s coordinator of events and sponsorship JON KURSIKOWSKI. “We’ve had a waiting list for both men’s hockey games and we’ve already filled up the available spaces for the schools for this month’s basketball event.”
More than 1,500 students will be in attendance when the Golden Hawks square off against their crosstown rivals on January 28.
“This event provides the students with an opportunity to enjoy a very unique live sporting experience while also promoting the benefits of leading a healthy, active lifestyle,” added Kursikowski. “Not only will the students get the chance to watch some outstanding amateur athletes, and see the potential future benefits of getting involved in sport, but they will also be provided with opportunities during the game to be active themselves.”
Laurier and Waterloo have already met once this season on the basketball court with the Golden Hawks earning a thrilling 83-81 victory over the Warriors thanks to a last-second basket from leading scorer Will Coulthard of Oakville, Ont.
In order to accommodate the schools attending the game, tip off for the men’s game has been moved from 8 p.m. to 11 a.m. The women’s game will still tip-off at 6pm as per the original schedule.
General admission tickets for both games are still available for purchase by visiting tickets.laurierathletics.com or at the door on the day of the game. For those wishing to attend the men’s game, specific seating sections will be reserved for all non-school groups. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the game as parking and the main entrance of the Athletic Complex are expected to be busier than normal.
