WATERLOO, Ont. (January 19, 2015) - Women's basketball guard Kaitlyn Schenck of Kitchener, Ont., and men's middle distance runner Adam Cornwall of St. Mary’s, Ont., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 18, 2015.
Schenck played an instrumental role in helping the No. 8 Golden Hawks upset the No. 1 Windsor Lancers on Saturday afternoon. The third year psychology major tied her career high with 19 points and added two rebounds as the Hawks defeated the Lancers 60-53. Thirteen of her 19 points came in the second half, including a pair of three-pointers late to seal the win, as Laurier handed Windsor their first home loss since 2010. For the week, Schenck averaged 12.5 points and 2.5 rebounds as she also chipped in with six points and three boards in the Hawks 75-49 win over Western on Wednesday.
Schenck earns Female Athlete of the Week honours for the first time this season and second time in her career.
Cornwall set a new school record in the 3000m as Laurier competed this past weekend in the Don Wright Invitational, hosted by Western. The fourth year Master’s student in kinesiology raced to gold in the event as he posted a time of eight minutes, 46.43 seconds, beating out two other competitors by nearly four seconds to pick up the win.
This marks the first time in his career that Cornwall has been named the Male Athlete of the Week.
