OTTAWA (January 13, 2014) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team broke into the CIS Top 10 on Tuesday afternoon as they were ranked No. 8 in the latest rankings.
Thanks to an 8-1 start to the season, one victory off their best start in team history, the purple and gold have earned a national ranking in at least one week for each of the past three seasons.
Laurier makes their way into the Top 10 this year thanks to another outstanding start to the year. After losing their first game of the season to now No. 9 Ryerson, the Golden Hawks have reeled off eight straight victories matching the most consecutive wins in school history.
The reason behind the Hawks success is a strong balance of both offensive and defensive play. Laurier ranks third overall in the OUA in points per game with 71.8 and currently have four players averaging more than 10 points per game, including Whitney Ellenor of Pickering, Ont., NICOLE MORRISON of Hamilton, Kaitlyn Schenck of Kitchener, Ont., and Sam Jacobs of Enniskillen, Ont.
Defensively, the Hawks have been just as impressive as they are currently holding opponents to a miniscule 33.2 percent shooting, second best in the league.
Wednesday night, Laurier will have a chance to set a new consecutive wins mark while also matching their best start to school history, when they host the Western Mustangs (2-7). Tipoff will be 6 p.m. at the Athletic Complex.
