GUELPH, Ont. (January 10, 2015) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team continued their impressive start to the 2014-15 season on Saturday afternoon as they won their eighth straight game, a 67-53 victory over the Guelph Gryphons.
The winning streak is an accomplishment Laurier had achieved only once before when they won eight consecutive conference games between November 13, 2004 and January 5, 2005.
Coming off of two consecutive wins of their own, the Guelph Gryphons gave the Hawks a good challenge and managed to keep the purple and gold within reach throughout the first half, closing with a score of 28-25.
Second year guard NICOLE MORRISON of Hamilton, Ont., shone for the Hawks as she contributed 10 of the Hawks 28 points in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Once again, the Hawks outlasted their opponents and used the third and fourth quarters to stake out a clear victory. Centre Whitney Ellenor of Pickering, Ont., notched an outstanding 15 points in 13 minutes of play throughout the second half. As for Morrison, she finished the contest with a game-high 18 points to go along with two assists.
Guelph’s guard Bridget Atkinson of Welland, Ont., was a clear force for the Gryphons on the court as she contributed 14 points, four assists, and two steals.
The Hawks return home next week to take on the Western Mustangs on January 14th at 6:00pm when they will attempt to break their team record for most regular season consecutive wins.
