Volleyball Intramural Fall 2014 recap

After an exciting season, here is a recap of the thrilling finals night:

Sets Squad vs. Team Alicia P

At 6pm on Saturday, our women’s blue league was ready fight it out for the championship t-shirt. Team Alicia P was ranked number 1 coming out of the regular season and were prepared to battle Sets Squad for the coveted cotton blend. Armed with setter Bailey Kozai and big hitters Jennie Le and Alicia Pouw, these girls were set to keep their win streak alive.  Sets Squad showed up to play with strong setting by Tina Lieu, passing by Irene Halis, blocking by Kim Cawley and hits by Shay Allen. They proved to be a team with great communication skills and were constantly full of encouragement. Their team cohesion proved to be the key needed to beat a team like Team Alicia P and Set Squad prevailed by sweeping the competition in two sets. Awesome job Sets Squad! See you next semester on Wednesday nights!

You Can’t Set with Us vs. Team Emily T

Coming off an undefeated regular season, You Can’t Set with Us showed up ready to play on Saturday night. With league MVP Kailey Houston leading the pack, the girls came out swinging hard. Great passing by Kelly Young, serving by Ingrid Crozier and Rachel Woolley, and blocks by Laura Tichonchuk and Alyssa Becque combined with superb sets by Ashley Murphy, helped You Can’t Set with Us again exerted their dominant style of play. Aided by finally making it through a set without dying of laughter, the team perfected their free ball passing which was what drove this team to victory over Team Emily T. Team Emily T put in a valiant effort led by middle Rachel Rowles but it wasn’t quite enough to defeat You Can’t Set with Us. Winning 25-9 in the first match and 25-13 in the second, the team that wears pink on Wednesdays finished off their season with style. Great semester ladies and Ingrid, your team will miss you next semester!

Globo Gym Golden Hawks vs. The Floaters

A three set game led to an exciting men’s league final on Saturday afternoon in the AC. The Floaters, coming off an upset of the top ranked men’s team after regular season, were set to challenge Globo Gym Golden Hawks. Both teams, having never played each other in regular season, were more than ready to face off for the coveted intramural t-shirt. The Globo Gym Golden Hawks led by dominant fourth year setter Soheil Jamshidi showed their strength through big swings by Mitch Carter and Evan Krychowski and strong serving by Kevin McDonald and Travis Boucher leading them to a victory over The Floaters in the first set. In the second, The Floaters, also known as the team of Dans, showed their resilience by attacking back using left sides Dan Grisebach, who led men’s league in kills over the regular season, and Kyle Schulhauser. With superb rallies throughout the set, The Floaters edged Globo Gym Golden Hawks taking the game to a third set. The third set proved to be a battle of defence between these two hard-hitting teams with outstanding passing coming from Jarson Wu on Globo Gym and NICK MCCREADY on The Floaters and amazing defence from Devin Swanson on Globo Gym who seemed to be all over the court making saves left and right. On both sides of the court, huge blocks were thrown up by Sam Bibby (Globo Gym) and Shawn Brooks (The Floaters) making it an exciting final set to watch. The set ended with The Globo Gym Golden Hawks showing their experience and team cohesion over the second year Floaters, having it end with a second men’s league title going to this team. Congratulations Globo Gym Golden Hawks, you played a truly great game!
