WATERLOO, Ont. (November 26, 2014) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team capped off the first half of their 2014-15 season by winning their sixth consecutive game with an 87-72 victory over the University of Waterloo Warriors.
The Warriors had a quick start on the Hawks with some strong all-around play from guard Marti Killeen of Oakville, Ont., but Laurier used the last few minutes of play in the quarter to make some final baskets and take a 24-17 lead.
Going into the second, the two teams kept pace with each other and, although the Warriors outscored the Hawks in the quarter, Laurier was able to maintain a small 39-35 lead going into the half.
Second year guard NICOLE MORRISON of Hamilton, Ont., lead the Hawks in scoring by the midway point as she recorded 13 of the team's 39 points. Also breaking the double-digit barrier by the half was centre Whitney Ellenor of Pickering, Ont., who had contributed 10 points in the effort.
The third quarter was when the Hawks put the pedal to the metal and knocked in 31 collective points to the Warriors’ 12, establishing a convincing dominance on the court. While the Warriors brought back the heat in the fourth, the black-and-gold team would not be able to bounce back from the deficit to earn the game.
The 87-72 win added to the near-perfect season for the Hawks who now sit at 6-1 on the season. The Waterloo Warriors move to a 1-6 regular season record with the loss.
Ellenor headlined for the Hawks once again as she lead her team with 18 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and two blocks on the night. Morrison was also very good for Laurier shooting 50 percent from the field to finish with 17 points.
Kaitlyn Schenck of Kitchener, Ont., and Alexandra Spadaro of Grimsby, Ont., also contributed to the win with 14 and 12 points respectively.
Fourth year Warrior Killeen put up a game-high 19 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks in the loss for the University of Waterloo.
The Hawks will resume regular season play when they head to Hamilton, in the new year to take on the McMaster Marauders. The game is scheduled for January 7, 2015 and can be seen live on OUA.tv at 6 p.m.
