WATERLOO, Ont. (November 14, 2014) - Welcome to the 11th edition of This Week in Laurier Athletics for the 2014-15 season. In this week’s edition, we preview the men’s hockey team as they host a pair of Quebec-based schools in Concordia and UQTR.
FEATURED GAME: Men’s Hockey vs Concordia (Saturday, November 15 - 7:30 p.m.)
The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks will put their perfect record at the Waterloo Recreation Complex on the line on Saturday night when they face the Concordia Stingers on home ice.
Coming into this weekend’s matchup, the Hawks are a perfect 3-0-0 in Waterloo this season having picked up wins over the Lakehead Thunderwolves, the Toronto Varsity Blues and the York Lions. They will go for win number four in their home rink against a team they’ve enjoyed considerable success against in the past. In their 16 all-time meetings with Concordia, the Hawks have 11 wins, three losses and two ties.
Last season, the Hawks and Stingers met in Montreal with Laurier coming away with a 6-4 victory. Forward Derek Schoenmakers of Kitchener, Ont., was the star of that game for the Hawks as he scored four times to set a modern day single game scoring record for Laurier. The win gives the purple and gold a two-game winning streak against Concordia entering Saturday’s game.
Although the Hawks are currently sitting in last place in the OUA standings, a win against Concordia will vault them into the middle of the pack in what is shaping up as a very competitive OUA West conference in 2014-15. Laurier enters play this weekend trailing fourth place Lakehead by just four points and have three games in hand over the Thunderwolves.
