ST. CATHARINES, Ont. (October 29, 2014) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s rugby team saw their season come to an end on Wednesday as they lost 36-22 to the Brock Badgers in the OUA Quarter-finals.
Laurier, making their first appearance in the postseason since 2009, got off to a quick start in the game as they opened the scoring to take a 5-0 lead. However, the rest of the first half belonged to the Badgers as they scored 26 of the next 29 points to take a 26-8 lead at the half.
An early try and a covert to start the second half gave the Badgers a 33-8 advantage but the Laurier began to make their push. Back-to-back tries and two converts pulled Laurier to within 11 points midway through the final 40 minutes but they could get no closer as Brock closed out the game with a penalty goal to make the final 36-22.
Laurier’s scoring came from four players as Andrew Thomson of Pickering, Ont., Kieran Glover of Toronto, and Brandon Kostyk of Toronto, each recorded tries while Nathan Roberts of Waterloo, Ont., successfully made two converts and a penalty goal.
Despite the loss, the 2014 season was one of promise for a Laurier team under the new leadership of coaches Ian McLeod and JEFF WOOD. The Hawks won three games, their most since 2009, and they will look to carry that momentum forward into next year.
