MBASE loses battle for first place to Brock

WATERLOO, Ont. (October 5, 2014) - The Wilfrid Laurier men’s baseball team hosted the Brock Badgers on Sunday in a re-match of the 2013 OUA Baseball Championship game.  This was also a battle for first place in the OUA standings.  Brock got the better of Laurier on this day, winning both ends of the double header by scores of 6-1 and 6-5.

The two losses drops the Golden Hawks 2014 conference record to 12-4 with 2 games remaining.  One win in the final two games will clinch a second place finish for Laurier.

Game One – Brock 6 Laurier 1
This was a close game until the 9th when Brock got 3 to break it open.  Brett van Pelt struggled with his control and walks hurt the Golden Hawks as it was a very even game apart from the walks.

- Justin Newbold goes 2/3 giving up nothing
 
Game Two - Brock 6 Laurier 5
Laurier fell behind early, battled back, but ultimately couldn't get a timely hit as this one was back and forth all afternoon.

- Andrew Ziedins worked into the 7th inning and battled hard - 6 innings pitched with 6 runs on  hits with 5 walks and 5 strikeouts
- Jake Tougas came on in the seventh inning and worked 1 inning giving up 1 hit

“This was not the result we were hoping for in this battle for first place” commented Head Coach SCOTT BALLANTYNE. “However we have clinched a playoff spot and have set ourselves up to finish second and earn the first game bye at the OUA Championships.  Brock played well today, didn’t make many mistakes and capitalized on the ones we made.  This was a good measuring stick for us as we look to improve every week."

The Golden Hawks will play two non-conference games this week to prepare for the final two conference games on the road at Queen’s on Saturday October 11th.
