WATERLOO, Ont. (September 4, 2014) - Welcome to the first edition of This Week in Laurier Athletics for the 2014-15 season. In this week’s edition, we highlight the men’s baseball team who open up their season on Saturday against Western.
FEATURED GAMES: M Baseball vs Western (Saturday, September 6 - 12 & 4 p.m.)
The defending OUA Champions officially kick off their 2014 season at Bechtel Park on Saturday afternoon against the Western Mustangs.
The Hawks, who captured their first conference title in school history a year ago, return a number of key players from that championship squad including pitchers Brett Van Pelt of Whitby, Ont., and Jordan Petruska of Mississauga, Ont. Both players had sparkling numbers in 2013, as Van Pelt had a 2.25 ERA while Petruska was even better at 1.95. The two veterans will be called upon by head coach SCOTT BALLANTYNE to anchor the rotation in 2014.
In terms of position players, the big name for the Hawks will once again be outfielder Jonathan Brouse of Port Perry, Ont. Last year, he became the first men’s baseball player to capture Laurier’s President’s Award as the top male athlete at the University after batting .434 during the regular season. Now in his fourth season with the Hawks, look for Brouse to once again be a key cog for both the purple and gold’s offence and defence.
Western will represent a tough test for the Hawks to kick off the year. Heading into last season, the Hawks had not beaten the Mustangs in five years but a late season victory over Western was a key catalyst in driving Laurier to the OUA Championship. If the purple and gold can get off to a quick start against Western, it could jump start another run at the OUA title.
