WATERLOO, Ont. (September 3, 2014) – The Wilfrid Laurier men’s rugby team started off their regular season with an exciting 23-14 win over the Waterloo Warriors at the Columbia Ice Fields on Wednesday afternoon.
The Warriors jumped out to an early lead in the contest, forcing the Hawks to fight back throughout the entire first half. A strong closing effort from the purple and gold allowed them to trail by just three, 14-11, after 40 minutes.
The Hawks finally took the lead in the second half after a short distance try and convert to earn a four point lead. Another try shortly after would bring the Hawks to the final 23-14 win.
Standing out for Laurier in this crosstown rivalry victory was Kyle Spicer of Aurora, Ont., who scored one try, one convert, and two penalty goals. Also scoring for the purple and gold were Joshua Clayton of Peterborough, Ont., and Thomas Larouche of Toronto, with one try each.
The game marked the first victory for new Laurier head coach IAN MCLEOD, who took charge of the men’s rugby team in July this year. The change in coaching offered the team a chance to re-strategize after coming off of an unsatisfying 0-6-1 regular season last year, and this season-opening win hints at a hopeful season ahead.
Coming up next in rugby action, the Golden Hawks host Queen’s on Saturday, September 6 for their home opener at University Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
