MBASE opens exhibition play with pair of wins
Laurier: 10 Ontario Terriers: 5

ST. MARY'S, Ont. (August 27, 2014) - The Wilfrid Laurier Baseball team opened up their 2014 non-conference schedule on Tuesday with a double-header at the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in beautiful St. Mary’s, Ontario.  The Golden Hawks swept the double header beating the Ontario Terriers U18 team 10-5 in the morning and completing the sweep with a 9-3 victory over OUA conference rivals, the Guelph Gryphons in the afternoon.

The Golden Hawks put up 9 runs in the second inning, highlighted by a 3 run triple by Brandon Manley.  This was a very solid first game for the team as they were able to work in a lot of the new players into the game.

In the afternoon game, Laurier rode a 4 run first inning to a 9-3 victory.  This game was highlighted by a 2 run HR from SS Cal Murphy in the first inning and the pitching staff was excellent and there were no walks issued to Guelph hitters all afternoon.

“This was a great start to our non-conference schedule.” commented Head Coach SCOTT BALLANTYNE.  “We played great defence and pitched well.  Those two elements of our game will be keys to our success this season and today was a nice start for us.  We had some nice performances from some of our freshman and we’re looking forward to see how they will contribute to our program."

Next up for the Golden Hawks is a non-conference game with the Kincardine Cubs on Wednesday at 7:30pm in Kincardine.  Laurier will host Western on Sept. 6th at 12pm in the OUA conference home opener.
