WATERLOO, Ont. (July 29, 2014) - The defending OUA Champion Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's baseball team has finalized its non-conference schedule for the 2014 fall season.
The Golden Hawks will open the non-conference season with a Laurier tradition, a double-header at the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in St. Mary's on Tuesday, August 26th. The Golden Hawks will take on the powerhouse U18 Ontario Terriers in the first game and the University of Guelph in the second game.
Laurier will travel to coach SCOTT BALLANTYNE's hometown, Kincardine, for a team building excursion on Wednesday August 27th where they will take on the Kincardine Cubs Senior team.
Laurier will then challenge the top teams in the OCAA as they will travel to beautiful Connorvale Park in Etobicoke on Friday August 29th for a double header with Humber College. On Labour Day weekend the Golden Hawks will travel south to Windsor in an effort to avenge back-to-back losses to St. Clair College in the 2013 OUA/OCAA Championship Tournament. St. Clair will host Laurier for a double header at Lacasse Park in Tecumseh and then the two teams will travel to Chatham on Sunday for another double header at Fergie Jenkins Field at Rotary Park as part of Minor Baseball Day in Chatham.
Laurier will take a couple days off before hosting Guelph on Wednesday September 3rd at Bechtel Park and then the final non-conference game will take place at Arnold Anderson Stadium in Brantford as part of the Orientation Week festivities for the Brantford Campus on Thursday September 4th. The Windsor Lancers will provide the competition in Brantford.
These pre-season 11 non-conference games will prepare the Golden Hawks for their OUA conference opener at home on Saturday Sept. 6th when they host long-time rivals, the Western Mustangs in a double header at Bechtel Park. During the course of the season, Laurier will play non-conference games against the likes of the Ontario Blue Jays U18, University of Toronto, Ontario Terriers U18, Team Ontario U18, Ontario Royals U18, the Great Lake Canadians U18, and the Durham College Lords. All of these U18 programs are highly regarded and have produced some top notch players in recent years, including many who have gone on to play for the Golden Hawks.
"We are excited at the non-conference schedule that we have put together this year," commented Head Coach SCOTT BALLANTYNE. "We will play 11 games before our first conference game which will allow us an opportunity to mix and match to find a line-up that we will feel comfortable with to start our season. The non-conference games last year provided us a great opportunity for our younger players to get a taste of what OUA Baseball is all about and that depth proved invaluable to us down the stretch last season. St. Clair College, Humber College and the University of Windsor are all very strong teams and will prepare us for our conference season. Getting off to a fast start is a big key to a short season and our tough non-conference schedule will allow us to work out the kinks and get the jitters out of the way for our younger players before the start of the conference schedule."
