WATERLOO, Ont. (July 24, 2014) - Men's rugby player Nathan Roberts
of Waterloo, Ont., has been announced as one of the 12 players who will represent Team Canada at the FISU World University Rugby 7's Championships next month in Brazil.
Roberts, a scrum-half for the Golden Hawks who is entering his second year in the Arts program, will join Team Canada on August 1st for a five day training camp. The squad will then fly out to Brazil for the three-day championship being hosted in the city of Sao Jose de Campos, just outside of Sao Paulo, from August 8-10.
"I am very proud to be named to Team Canada's squad for the World University Championships," said Roberts. "We [Laurier] are coming off a great showing in 7's competition in Ontario this year when we finished third and I hope to bring my experience gained from there to the pitch in Brazil."
"This is an incredible accomplishment for a young player like Nathan," commented Laurier Athletic Director PETER BAXTER
. "Representing your country is one of the greatest achievements for any athlete and we wish him all the best as he competes in Brazil."
Roberts becomes the fourth current Laurier Golden Hawk to represent Canada at a FISU event over the past 12 months. Last summer, women's soccer defender Kelsey Tikka
of Thunder Bay, Ont., competed at the FISU Summer Games in Russia while women's hockey captain Laura Brooker
of Fergus, Ont., and women's curler Cheryl Kreviazuk of Ottawa, competed at the FISU Winter Games in Italy.
Team Canada's schedule and opponents have yet to be announced by the organizing committee. At the last World University Championships held in 2012 in France, Canada was one of 19 teams to compete and finished pool play with a 1-4 record.
