Athletics announces hiring of MRUG coaches
WATERLOO, Ont. (July 3, 2014) - The Wilfrid Laurier Department of Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce the hiring of Ian McLeod and JEFF WOOD who will lead the men's rugby program this upcoming season.

McLeod will hold the title of Head Coach under the new leadership structure for the program while Wood will serve as the Associate Head Coach.

"We are very excited to have Ian and Jeff join our rugby program as coaches," said Wally Gabler, the Coordinator of Interuniversity Sport on the hirings. "Their combined experience at the high school, club and university levels will give our student-athletes the very best opportunity to improve their overall skills and will help them grow and develop as students, athletes and people."

McLeod comes to Laurier as an NCCP level 3 certified coach and currently holds the head coaching position with the Aurora Barbarians men's club team. Wood is an NCCP level 2 certified coach and works within the Stratford Blackswans RFC, which he co-founded in 1991.

Aside from their coaching at the senior mens level, both gentlemen have coached at various levels within Rugby Ontario. McLeod started with the under 14 program in 2008, working his way up to the under 18's in 2014 while Wood has worked with the under 14 and under 16 programs since 2009.

Previously, both McLeod and Wood have lent their expertise to various teams in the OUA. McLeod has served in the past as an assistant coach with both the Brock Badgers and Toronto Varsity Blues while Wood has been with the Western Mustangs as well as previously serving as an assistant coach with the Golden Hawks.

"Ian and Jeff's strong background within the Ontario rugby community will provide us the opportunity to expand our recruiting network," added Gabler. "Their contacts will be invaluable as we work toward attracting the very best rugby players in the province."

McLeod and Wood will set to work immediately finalizing this year's recruiting class while building a schedule for Augusts training camp. The two will see their first conference game action as coaches on Wednesday, September 3 when they debut against the Waterloo Warriors on the road. Three days later, Laurier will kick off their home schedule at University Stadium against the reigning OUA Champion Queen's Gaels.
