The Laurier Dragon Boat Club has kicked off summer 2014 with a bang, to say the least. Starting at Pickering on May 31, the club successfully raced in two 500 metre competitions and one 200 metre, many members participating in their very first races ever! The Hawks got stronger as the day went on, and placed in 2nd place in the "B" division - a great outcome for their first day in the competitive world.
On June 14, Laurier for the first time brought two boats of Golden Hawk spirit to the St. Catharines Dragon Boat Festival. The day started rather chaotically; but, as the day wore on, once again the Golden Hawks got stronger and stronger. In this race, each boat was entered into 5 races; two 200 metres, two 500 metres, and a 1k. The Golden Hawks finished strongly and came 4th overall in the 200 metres, and won the consolation round for the 500 metres. By the time the 1k was coming up, many members were exhausted, many members felt that there was no way they could do a grueling one kilometre race. However, when they went out on the water, something changed. The Golden Hawks had a strong start, and proceeded to handle the competition with ease, coming in first by about 20 seconds. This gave us first overall in the consolation division, an amazing accomplishment for this team. Also, a special shout-out goes to our second boat, the Laurier Hawket Rockets, for competing with 8 people in a boat meant for 20 for much of the day. By the time the Hawket Rockets rolled in and finished up their 1k, the entire shoreline was going crazy for them. An awesome achievement, and one that will be remembered by everyone at the festival.
