Chaput named Outstanding Woman of Laurier
WATERLOO, Ont. (March 26, 2014) - Bree Chaput, a co-captain with the women's basketball team, was announced today as the 2014 Outstanding Women of Laurier during a luncheon at the Waterloo Inn Conference Hotel on Thursday afternoon.

Chaput, a native of Guelph, Ont., was one of four nominees for this year's award which included teammate Doreen Bonsu of Oakville, Ont., and women's soccer players Emily Brown of Waterloo, Ont., and Kelsey Tikka of Thunder Bay, Ont.

"Bree is a very deserving recipient of this award," said PETER BAXTER, Laurier's director of Athletics and Recreation. "During her four years here at Laurier, she has epitomized what this honour represents through her work on the court, in the classroom and in the community."

Chaput, a fourth year Kinesiology and Physical Education major, becomes the second women's basketball player to receive the award since its inception in 2006. Former Golden Hawk Jillian Ritsma was the first to do so back in 2007.

"It's such an honour and a privilege [to win this award], especially at such an amazing institute like Laurier," said Chaput who received her award in front of more than 250 people. "Doreen, Kelsey and Emily are all fantastic people, so just to be grouped with that group of girls and to be here today was such an honour."

A three-time CIS Academic All-Canadian, Chaput has been a versatile player for the women's basketball team, playing four different positions over her career. She has twice helped the Golden Hawks advance to the CIS Championship, including this year after her and her teammates won the OUA Bronze Medal.

This year, Chaput was the recipient of the prestigious McGraw-Hill Ryerson Student Scholarship, an award given out to just 20 university or college students across the country. The award recognizes not only academic and personal integrity, but also students classroom engagement and initiative.

Away from the court, Chaput has volunteered with Special Olympic track and field athletes, Big Brother Big Sister Waterloo Region and has served as an Athlete Academic Success Mentor for Lauriers Athlete Academic Success Program.

Laurier launched the Outstanding Women of Laurier award in 2006 to recognize female students who combine athletic and academic achievement with an active commitment to the community through volunteerism.

The event included an inspirational keynote address by Wilfrid Laurier alumna Kelly Murumets, the President and CEO of Tennis Canada and former President and CEO of ParticipACTION. The event was hosted by fellow Laurier alumna Daiene Vernile, anchor and producer for CTV Southwestern Ontario's Provincewide.

This year's event raised approximately $25,000 to help support women's athletic initiatives, scholarships and the mentoring program at Laurier.

The event was made possible by leadership sponsors RBC Royal Bank, RBC Dominion Securities, M&M Meat Shops and Miller Thomson LLP. Contributing sponsors included the City of Cambridge, the Waterloo Inn, as well as a number of Wilfrid Laurier University departments. In-kind sponsors included Robin's Goldsmithing.
