WATERLOO, Ont. (February 5, 2014) - Welcome to the 18th edition of This Week in Laurier Athletics for the 2013-14 season. In this week's edition, we look ahead to men's hockey's final games of 2013-14, and also preview women's hockey playoffs and the OUA Curling Championships.
FEATURED GAME: M Hockey vs UOIT (Saturday, Feb. 15 - 7:30 p.m.)
The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's hockey team will close out their 2013-14 season on home ice on Saturday night when they host the UOIT Ridgebacks.
For the Hawks, they will play their final game of the year after being eliminated from playoff contention last week. However, despite the tough season, Laurier will be looking to end the year on a high note with a victory over UOIT.
For a couple of Laurier players, tonight's game will represent the final chance to round out what have been impressive individual seasons. Second year forward Derek Schoenmakers
of Kitchener, Ont., enters play this week tied for 10th in conference goal scoring with 15 goals. He currently trails three players tied for second place by three goals and a strong week should guarantee a Top 10 finish for the Laurier sniper.
In goal, rookie netminder Vinny Merante
of Niagara Falls, N.Y., will look to close out what has been a very strong freshman campaign. The Hawks goalie is currently sixth overall in the OUA in save percentage at 0.923 and second best among rookies. His 2.82 goals against average is also fourth best among rookies and a solid week should help secure a possible rookie team nomination.
Following the game, the Hawks will be hosting their annual Autograph Day as they will be signing autographs for their fans around the track of the Waterloo Recreation Complex.
