Laurier Athletics would like to invite the local community to a celebration of the men's soccer national championship and the women's lacrosse provincial championship. The celebration will take place on Wednesday November 22nd in the concourse (outside of the Laurier Bookstore) at Wilfrid Laurier University at 12:00pm.
After 11 years, the men's soccer team handily recaptured the OUA crown by defeating the Brock Badgers 4-1, York Yeomen 3-0 and the Laurentian Voyageurs 3-0.
The Hawks then traveled to McMaster to participate in the Canadian Championships. There they cruised to the final with victories over the Victoria Vikes and Laurentian Voyageurs, to a match with the St. Mary’s Huskies. After a hard fought overtime game, the Hawks were able to secure their first ever National Championship with a shootout victory.
Many Hawks had outstanding individual accomplishments throughout the season including 6 OUA All-stars, 3 CIAU Tournament All-stars, 1 All-Canadian, OUA and CIAU Rookie of the year titles, CIAU Tournament MVP, and Most Valuable CIAU Tournament Goal keeper. Included in these individuals are local Kitchener Minor Soccer products, Kenny Nutt

, Dave Blicharski, Wojciech Cwik
, Danny Glibota and CIAU Championship winning goal scorer, Steve Cox
, as well as coaches Mario Halapir
and BARRY MACLEAN
With regards to the women's lacrosse gold medal, there successful season was topped off with a trip to Kingston for the OUA Championship. With victories in the round-robin play the women then were set to play the undefeated UofT squad in the gold-medal match. After battling all day and exchanging leads, the lady hawks were led to victory by captain Emily Watson
who scored the winning goal in the 10-9 win.
On Wednesday, University President, Dr. Bob Rosehart and the Laurier Staff, Faculty and Students will honour the Men’s Soccer National Champions and the Women's Lacrosse Champions.
